Gas Tax Funds Released Early from Feds To Help With COVID-19 Costs

The Gas Tax Fund is coming early this year.

The fund, allocated from the federal government, is distributed to 3,600 municipalities annually and totals over $2.2 billion.

In Alberta, funding is distributed on a per-capita basis with a minimum floor of $50,000.

While the payment from the feds usually comes twice a year, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Monday they’re making the 2020-21 funds available in one lump some to help cover the unexpected costs of COVID-19.

The funds can be used for public transit, wastewater infrastructure, drinking water, local roads and bridges, disaster mitigation, culture, tourism, recreation, among other things.
