Hundreds of runners took part in the Fort McMurray Marathon over the weekend.
On Sunday, Fort McMurrayites came out in droves to take part in either the full 42.2-kilometre race, the half-marathon, or the 10, 5 and 3-kilometre race – as well as the kids fun run.
Leanne McAmmond – who finished first in the women’s marathon tells Mix News she feels her hard work paid off.
“I feel amazing,” an exacerbated McAmmond said. “This is my fifth marathon – the first time I’ve ever run that far to win. It feels amazing.”
Daniel Elsdon competed in the men’s marathon and he says overall, it was a very rewarding experience.
“It was complicated for a marathon because it was part trail-part concrete so, you don’t know what kind of shoes to wear and the terrain’s different but all in all it was pretty good, fun and enjoyable.”
Elsdon feels it’s good to see the impact the race has on the community.
He adds the race was a good warm-up for an ultra-marathon he plans to compete in.
“This was actually a training run for me preparing for a 60-k in two weeks. So, this was just part of my regular training plan for that ultra-marathon I have coming up.”
The Regional Recreation Corporation has plans to bring the marathon back again for 2020.
