Santa Claus is coming to town this weekend.
Jolly Ol’ St. Nick will be driving his sleigh down Franklin Avenue on Saturday evening for the annual Santa Claus Parade.
The event begins on Reidel Street at 6 p.m., continuing onto Franklin and finishing on Morrison street.
“Something to keep in mind even though it starts at 6 p.m., if you’re waiting at Jubilee Plaza it has to travel all that distance to get down to you, so it probably won’t get down to Jubilee Plaza and the mall area until 6:45 p.m.,” said Arndis Arnold, RMWB Recreation Coordinator.
The municipality is reminding attendees to anticipate traffic delays, and plan ahead for transit detours.
Road closures include:
- Clearwater Drive (Morrison Street to Riedel Street) 12:00 p.m. – 9 p.m.
- Clearwater Drive (Riedel Street to Hospital Street) 5:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
- Riedel Street 5:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.
- Franklin Avenue 6:00 p.m. – 7:45 p.m.
- Morrison Street 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
The affected transit routes on Saturday will be 10, 11, 15, 16, 18, 91, 92, and 99.
Before the parade gets underway, at 5 p.m., Mayor and council will be hosting a Holly Jolly Party and Jubilee Plaza.
There will be free hot chocolate and cookies with Council, festive surprises and the lighting of the RMWB Christmas Tree.
“It’s an opportunity for Mayor and Council to celebrate the community and gather everyone together,” added Arnold.
During the day, the Santa Claus Parade Community Committee is hosting an Elf Workshop from 12 to 4:30 p.m. at the Wood Buffalo Regional Library. Then on Sunday, Dec. 2 from 10 to 11 a.m. there will be Breakfast with Santa at Peter Pond Mall.
