For the second consecutive year, a 20-year-old Fort McMurray woman is looking to be crowned Miss Alberta.
Victoria Helle applied to compete in the beauty pageant back in November of 2017 – but fell short of qualifying for the 2018 Miss Canada pageant.
This year, with a little more experience under her belt – she decided to take a shot again.
She tells Mix News she’s feeling way more prepared this year than her first time competing.
“This year for sure will be better for me. I went in last year not knowing anything about pageants and just did my own thing but this year I have a pageant coach and I am really more prepared to bring back the title.”
Helle, who deals with anxiety – takes Social Work at Keyano College and aspires to one day help those dealing with similar mental health struggles.
If she wins, she says she’d like to use her platform to better alleviate the stigma surrounding mental health in the community.
“I do that without a title anyway. I like to volunteer and spend my time babysitting and helping others, which is why I chose Social Work as a career. So, I just think that bringing back to the community is my number one goal as well as showing everyone what Fort McMurray really is.
After unexpectedly making the competition last year – Helle says the application process was much smoother this year – and she feels confident in her chances to win.
She hopes she can just inspire other girls and young women to follow their dreams.
“I never thought I could do anything like this, and here I am doing an interview about going into another pageant. I am hoping to win this year and show girls that anything is possible, and you can be anything you want to be.”
The Miss Alberta Pageant takes place February 24, 2019 – while the location has not yet been announced.
