RCMP Reminding Residents To Be Careful Around Frozen Bodies of Water

Fort McMurray, AB, Canada / MIX 103.7

Wood Buffalo RCMP are once again warning you about the dangers of frozen water.

The Mounties are urging the public to be careful when using a body of water for any activity as the ice could break under your weight.

They note the colour of the ice can indicate just how strong it is – clear blue being the strongest, while grey is usually unsafe.

If people do plan on going on top of a frozen body of water, then they should no the required thickness for each activity.

For people planning to skate alone, the ice should be at least 15 cm thick, 20 cm for skating parties, and at least 25 cm for snowmobiles.

The police are also encouraging parents to speak with their children so they understand the risks of playing near ice.
