The top high school football teams from across the province are coming to Fort McMurray to see who’ll be crowned champions.

The Wood Buffalo Football League will be hosting this year’s ‘Alberta Bowl’ – also known as the football provincials – for the first time at Shell Place.

It will feature the top 2 teams in each of the five Tiers in Alberta.

Chair of the Alberta Bowl Brendan Toner tells Mix News a big focus will be showcasing the community’s evolution into a legitimate football town.

“What we’re trying to do is to give all those southern teams, especially, an ultimate experience so they can take it home and ‘hey it wasn’t so bad’ and they were treated like royalty when they were up here.”

Holy Trinity, Father Mercredi, and Phoenix Football have already been eliminated and won’t be participating in the championship.

Toner says the champions will most likely be the team that can play in cold weather as it will take quite the storm to cancel any game.

“Whether it’s snowing, whether it’s freezing, whether it’s sunny or nice the games go – there’s been some ice bowls, there’s been some tropical November games, there’s been all sorts of games.”

One thing is certain, people who watch the games will be in for quite a treat.

“If people attend the Tier 1 game, for example, at least 10 per cent, 15 per cent of the kids that will be playing have already committed to already going to a CIS university and some kids even have access to resources outside of Canada.”

The championship will take place on November 23 and 24 at Shell Place.
