The Keyano Huskies Men’s Volleyball team are trying to keep themselves grounded after a perfect October.
The Husky men have exploded out of the gate to a 6-0 start to the season – following a sweep of Concordia University in their doubleheader this past weekend.
On Friday, the Huskies held the Thunder off the score sheet, winning in straight sets (25-13, 25-15, 25-15) and followed that up with a win in four sets (25-19, 25-5, 25-27, 25-12) on Saturday.
Head Coach Keegan Kuhr tells Mix News – the weekend was one of their best overall efforts so far this season.
“It’s good to see when you have that veteran group and they’re actually able to act like veterans and help the younger guys along. It helps everything mesh together well and that’s kind of what you’re seeing and that’s probably the result of being 6-and-0.”
Keyano’s victories not only keeps them atop the ACAC rankings – but places them 2nd place on the Canadian College’s Athletics Association Power Rankings behind only Fanshawe College of London, Ontario.
Kuhr says the real challenge now will be coming back even stronger from the break.
“There’s a good Lakeland team when we come back from the break – in Lakeland. Then we have Grand Prairie at home and then we have a huge four games at the end of the semester against NAIT, so, we’re really going to see who we are and what we’re all about in the coming weeks following the bye.”
2nd-year left setter Radoslaw Brzozowski was also named Huskies’ Male Player of the Week – following the weekend.
Despite having only lost two total sets this year, Kuhr notes after the season’s first month, he grades his team a B-Plus – with room for improvement.
“We’re 6-and-0, with just two set losses in the first six games so, there’s lots to be proud of but there is also stuff that we can be better at. We get the two weeks here, we rest and then we kind of have the heart of the schedule coming up after. We have to be ready.”
The Husky Men hit the bye week with time to rejuvenate before a doubleheader with Lakeland next weekend.
Lady Huskies Spike First Win
The Keyano Huskies Women’s Volleyball team got a huge monkey off its back this weekend.
The Lady Huskies overcame a loss on Friday at Concordia (25-27, 16-25 and 20-25) – to bounce back with their first win of the season on Saturday – in straight sets (25-19, 25-21 and 25-16).
Keyano is now 1-and-5 after one month of play.
Head Coach Nic Davies tells Mix News after stumbling out of the gate – the team is starting to find its identity.
“Friday was not the best but we bounced back well. It was a beatable group and our girls know their potential for our group. It’s just going to be about finding a breakthrough to keep the ball rolling the rest of the way.”
Haley Field, the second-year right side was named the Huskies female player of the week following the weekend.
Davies says Field was just one of the leaders who stood out and feels an effort like Saturday’s is exactly what this team is capable of.
“Our veterans and leadership group kind of took the reigns following Friday and we’re talking about how we can’t get frustrated and we’re still building an identity and trying to bounce back. I think they were a huge reason why we were able to rally and get back on track.”
Despite the win, the Huskies still sit very much on the outside looking in – in the ACAC North division.
Davies says heading into the break – there are a couple of areas that they will work to improve.
“We need to pass better. Blocking is still a bit of a focus – Friday was not the best but Saturday was a huge turnaround in that department if you look at the numbers, they improved a lot. Just things that we know we are going to have to do well.”
Once action resumes, Keyano picks up play with a contest at Lakeland.
