Habitat for Humanity Wood Buffalo is putting the finishing touches on their first rebuild project.
The home in Beacon Hill has been under construction since August 2017 with the new homeowners expected to move in within the next couple of weeks.
Executive Director of HFHWB Crystal Lewis-Wilton tells Mix News the family is just dying to walk through the doors.
“They’ve been out there, they’ve been volunteering, and they’ve been on the build site, so for them it’s been pretty exciting seeing things shape up – we’ve been painting, we’ve got doors painted and trim painted and cupboards just came in, so it’s starting to really shape up.”
The organization has had plans to complete five rebuild projects – two in Beacon Hill, two in Abasand, and one in Stone Creek.
Lewis-Wilton says they’re hoping to have all the homes built by the end of Spring.
Work is currently underway on just one of the remaining projects.
“We’ll get the foundation in and then we’ll have trades in there to do the plumbing and electrical and while they’re doing that we can be working on one of the other homes, so it’s try kind of trying to time things.”
They will be holding a key ceremony on November 17.
The organization is already planning ahead to ensure they keep busy once they finish the rebuilds.
HFHWB has bought a property in Stone Creek and are finalizing a second purchase in Abasand.
The plan is to build two duplexes meaning four families will be able to move into a new home.
“Being able to serve two families at one time, that’s really fantastic for us, and it’s a model that we would like to continue doing through the years.”
They’re expecting to start accepting family applications in the next couple of weeks.
