The Wheelchair Sports Alberta Association is receiving a federal grant to help start a parasport program in Fort McMurray.
The non-profit has been responsible for starting up multiple activities for people who use a wheelchair but haven’t lost their love for sports.
The federal government announced on Thursday their plans to distribute $812,000 to 29 organizations across six provinces to ‘assist in the creation, sustainability, and improvement of parasport programming.’
“We have seen firsthand the positive impact sport can have, and it is so important for children to have access to affordable and accessible sport opportunities,” said Karen O’Neill, CEO of the Canadian Paralympic Committee, in a release.
“This is a critical foundation to developing a sustainable sport system in Canada.”
The WSA is looking to develop and run programming for local kids with disabilities. They’re planning on using the funding to secure new equipment and rent facilities to start three new clubs.
