The 2018/19 AJHL season is fast approaching.
The Fort McMurray Oil Barons started their training camp on Thursday – ending with their annual ‘Blue and Gold’ game on Sunday.
Head Coach Tom Keca tells Mix News this time of year feels much like Christmas.
“There’s all this anticipation, you want to see what your players have done over the summer and of course when they come back that first day, some of them blow you out of the water because of their preparedness and what they’ve done and other guys sort of disappoint you.”
Keca says the focus this year is to have a team that can have success in both the regular season and the playoffs.
He notes he has high hopes the team will be able to do that.
“With the mixture of senior veterans we have coming back and that infusion of youthful enthusiasm, I think that we’ll have the makeup of another very competitive team this year.”
Keca adds it will be tough after losing some key players from last year including Will Conley, Curtis Roach, and Eric Szudor.
“It’s a lot easier if we have 20 guys picking up a little bit of the slack rather than just relying on one or two.”
Fans can get their first taste of action at 12 p.m. on Sunday when the Oil Barons play their ‘Blue and Gold’ game at the Casman Centre.
