Drivers in the RMWB have been getting slightly more distracted at the wheel this year.
According to Media Relations Officer of the Wood Buffalo RCMP Teri-Ann Deobald, as of June 30, 306 tickets have been handed out for distracted driving in comparison to 274 in 2017.
She tells Mix News the increase is likely circumstantial.
“The numbers change depending on how many officers are in different sections of the Wood Buffalo RCMP detachment. How many officers are in traffic enforcement specifically and how many officers are on general duties that happen to be enforcing traffic.”
Deobald recommends drivers use a Bluetooth device or a car mount if they need to make a phone call while on the road.
“It slides into one of the holders and sticks so you can single touch your electronic device while it is connected to your vehicle. Just like with your radio, because you’d be touching it with one finger – just like you’d change the radio station.”
Deobald adds if you do see an instance of distracted driving – it’s best to contact Wood Buffalo RCMP.
