Fentanyl Deaths Continue To Rise Across Province

The number of fentanyl-related deaths is continuing to increase across the province.

From January 1 to May 6, 228 people have died from an apparent overdose, according to the Health Ministry’s second-quarter interim report on Opioids and Substances of Misuse.

In the first three months of 2018, 158 people died from using fentanyl.

The North Zone continues to see the least amount of overdoses, at just 11 through the beginning of May. The most deaths are in the Calgary area with 112.

The report says if this rate continues, 2018 will have more deaths than 2017 – which had a total of 583.

Meanwhile, 66 people also overdosed from carfentanil in the first four months of the year.
