It looks like the battle over random drug and alcohol testing at Suncor is coming to an end.
The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed Unifor Local 707A’s appeal on Thursday.
Suncor started their drug and alcohol testing policy back in 2003 – first implementing random tests in 2012.
Speaking to Mix News in December 2017, former Local Union President Ken Smith told Mix News these tests were violating the workers’ basic human rights.
“It’s a very embarrassing situation for a lot of people to go through, it’s uncalled for.”
Unifor would eventually file a grievance report and in 2014 an Arbitration Panel ruled the tests were, in fact, a violation of their rights.
Suncor eventually applied for a judicial review and in May 2016, the Alberta Court of Queen’s Bench rejected the Arbitration’s decision.
An appeal of the decision was quickly ruled against, however, Unifor received an interim injunction to allow them time to appeal to the Supreme Court.
