The municipality is conducting its first census since the 2016 Horse River wildfire.

On Monday, Mayor Don Scott became the first resident to be enumerated while declaring April 9 – Municipal Census Day.

“April 9 is our reference point for Census 2018 – everyone who lives in Wood Buffalo today will be counted from now until June 30,” said project lead Kodjo Efu in a release. “We’re not here to count how many trucks are parked out front or check if you have a permit for your basement suite – we’re only interested in collecting census information.”

On April 16, census takers will begin going door-to-door gathering information. Residents can also fill out the questionnaire online once they’ve received the census 2018 PIN letters in the mail.

This is the first count the region has conducted since 2015 and will reflect the impact that the Horse River wildfire has had on the population.

The RMWB receives $200 for each person counted. All funds will go towards a variety of projects including road construction, emergency services, and parks.
