Municipality Looking For Public Input Before Cannabis Legalization

You’re getting a chance to voice your opinion on how the legalization of marijuana should be dealt with in Wood Buffalo.

Over the next six weeks, the RMWB will be offering an online survey and multiple public engagement sessions for people to discuss potential rules and regulations for cannabis.

“The Federal Government has signaled it will legalize recreational cannabis this summer and we want to ensure any proposed Bylaw changes for Council’s consideration are guided by the communities, residents, and stakeholders we serve,” said Jamie Doyle, Director of Planning and Development, said in a release.

So far, the federal and Alberta government have established rules for age, possession limits, and distances from schools and healthcare facilities.

The municipality is focusing on potential changes to the Land Use Bylaw, Business Licence Bylaw, Smoking Bylaw, and rules for public consumption, among other new guidelines.

“Any recommendation we develop will also be aligned with federal and provincial cannabis legislation and will put community health and safety as a priority,” added Doyle.

The federal government says legalization is expected to happen sometime around July.
