An explosion at South Street Burger in downtown Fort McMurray caused the entire plaza to be shut down over the weekend.

Emergency crews were called to a structure fire at the restaurant located near Riedel Street and Manning Avenue around 4 a.m. on Friday.

Wood Buffalo RCMP say several businesses were damaged but no one was injured as a result.

Co-owner of Your Dollar Store With More – located next to the restaurant, Doug Marcinowski tells Mix News when he received the call he didn’t think it was anything out of the ordinary.

“The front and rear door go off at the same time. If it were a burglar, they would’ve just come in one door. So immediately I thought, this must be a mistake but obviously it was not.”

Businesses like Tommy Gun’s and Your Dollar Store With More Remain Closed

Marcinowski says the explosion completely destroyed his dividing wall.

“I get a phone call at around 6 a.m. from my manager saying there are fire trucks and police all over the building.”

He notes it’s the second time their downtown location has been temporarily shut down since the wildfire.

Police are investigating the incident as suspected arson.

They are seeking any information or video surveillance footage from 3 a.m. to 4:15, in relation to the fire that might aid in the investigation.
