Let The Games Begin: 2018 Alberta Winter Games Are Underway

With the lighting of the torch at MacDonald Island, the 2018 Alberta Winter Games are officially underway.

On Friday, thousands of athletes and patrons were in attendance at the opening ceremonies at Shell Place’s baseball stadium for the Winter Games – emceed by Olympian and two-time gold medalist Alexandre Bilodeau.

26 local athletes will be competing in 22 events including artist gymnastics, alpine skiing, figure skating, and badminton among other sports, over the next three days.

General Manager for the Winter Games Michelle Toner tells Mix News it was an emotional roller coaster seeing all the athletes roll into town.

“To see those faces of those kids who are going to have an experience of a lifetime. For some, it’ll be there only multisport games, it’ll be the only time they get to experience something like this. For others, it’ll be the first of many steps in their athletic career and we get to play a part.”

During a windy ceremony, many key local figures took time to speak about what it means to Fort McMurray to bring such a prestigious event to our area.

Mayor Don Scott had the crowd of young athletes pumped with his enthusiasm for the weekend – and commended all those involved for bringing everything together.

Toner feels the games widen the sports horizon of the region.

She says they provide an opportunity for athletes and fans alike to see sports activity we might not normally be accustomed to.

“It allows kids to see what else is out there and hopefully leaves a legacy of sports development in our community and that’s really what we hope for a lot of organizations. What we’ve done in bringing these athletes to the community will support their current organizations or hopefully spearhead the development of future organizations.”

Minister of Culture and Tourism Ricardo Miranda was also on hand to encourage all of Alberta’s best and brightest athletes, while also being presented an Albertan flag with the signatures of all the athletes involved in this year’s games.

That flag will go with him to PyeongChang on Monday, as Miranda will present the flag to current Canadian Olympians competing overseas in the Olympic Winter Games.
