A local family got the surprise of their lives after coming back from a vacation to a newly renovated home.
For roughly two weeks, over 100 businesses and hundreds of volunteers have been working around the clock fixing Matt and April Morgan’s home in Timberlea.
The goal was to help the parents three-year-old daughter, Lily, who was born with Congenital Heart Failure, the result of a very narrow artery that prevents blood flow to her body below the heart, leading to a very fragile immune system.
Due to this condition, Lily needs very clean air, which would sometimes be an issue in the Morgan’s home as there were a number of issues including persistent mold.
On Thursday, hundreds of people gathered outside the home, waiting in the cold, to see the family’s reaction. After arriving in a firetruck, the family saw the house for the first time, tears flowing.
Holding back her emotions, April Morgan tells Mix News this was the biggest and best surprise of her life.
“I was aware they were redoing our house but I just figured new floor, new paint, and that was it. It’s completely different, you wouldn’t be able to tell it was the same house.”
The house now features rooms for their three kids along with a fully updated room for Lily with access directly to Matt and April’s room, along with a camera.
Despite the additions to the house, April says the biggest difference is what’s not there anymore.
“It doesn’t smell musky, it doesn’t smell moldy, it’s not drafty, it’s as if we walked into a showhome that you see for sale.”
Over the last week, the entire family of five, including their two other daughters Brianna and Chloe, were in Florida thanks to Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada.
Matt says Lily’s new room put a bigger smile on her face over their trip to Disneyland.
He adds he can’t fully put into words what it means for Lily to have her own safe space.
“The girls were sharing a room and they were getting cramped up and now they each have their own space and especially with the girls in school if they bring back a flu bug we can separate Lily off and she won’t catch it.”
To sum up their day, both April and Matt say their family has hit the jackpot.
“It’s been a long couple of years and we’ve won the lottery, it doesn’t get any better than this,” added Matt.
