Two Keyano College Student Athletes Killed In Weekend Collision South Of Fort McMurray

Two Keyano College student-athletes have died following a collision on Highway 63 over the weekend.

Wood Buffalo RCMP were called to the scene about 95 km south of Fort McMurray just after 10:30 a.m. Saturday.

Police say a car traveling southbound rear-ended a stationary flatbed tow truck.

The 19-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene, while her 19-year-old passenger was airlifted to an Edmonton-area hospital in serious life-threatening condition.

She later succumbed to her injuries.

In a statement, Keyano College says they are deeply saddened by this tragic event and their thoughts and sympathies are with their family and friends.

“Keyano’s Mental Health Team is providing trauma counseling and additional mental health resources are being made available at the college. We will do whatever we can to support our students, faculty, and staff during this difficult time,” the statement reads.

The driver of the tow-truck didn’t report any injuries to police.

Traffic was down to one lane for several hours while police investigated.

The Mounties say road conditions were slippery with slush and icy sections at the time of the collision, but add all possible factors are being considered.
