The Fort McMurray Oil Barons earned another big win to mark their fourth straight, as they also took part in an annual tradition.
On Friday night, the Barons held their Teddy Bear Toss as they steamrolled the Olds Grizzlys by a score of 5-0.
According to Barons Head Coach Tom Keca, countless bears and other stuffed animals hit the ice when Will Conley notched the game’s first goal.
“When the goal fell, and you see teddy bears start to litter the ice, you can’t help but feel good. It puts a smile on your face to know those bears are going to wind up in the hands of a very deserving young individual.”
Conley notched three assists in addition to his tally, while Shane Fraser scored a pair and backup netminder Chris Curr picked up his first career shutout win.
Keca says the toss is an excellent way for the Barons to give back to the community, especially during the holiday season.
“We’re glad the fans didn’t have to wait too long, it was about halfway through the first period when we scored, and the bears started to rain down. It was good to see and for us, giving back to the community is important and on top of that, we get a 5-nothing win, so, all in all it was a great weekend for us.”
Coach for the Peewee Barons Sean McFatridge says it’s great to see the kids get together with the older Barons for a good cause.
“The older Barons coming out is huge. They’ll be cheering us on and helping the kids pick up the bears on the ice, so, it’s great. Tom’s done a great job with the community and getting the players out there.”
The Peewee Barons are taking on the Dawson Creek Canucks at 3:45 p.m. at Frank Lacroix Arena.
