Hundreds of residents were at MacDonald Island Park this morning to commemorate those who’ve fought for our country.

RCMP, firefighters, EMS, politicians and veterans were on hand to recognize the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month.

Fort McMurray-Athabasca MP David Yurdiga, Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA Tany Yao, Mayor Don Scott and Legion President Pat Duggan all took time to give their remarks of remembrance.

During Mayor Scott’s speech, he spoke of the importance of showing respect on this day – and commended the crowd for taking the time to remember.

The ceremony featured a video presentation on World War I, as well as a reading of Flanders Fields and a rendition of the hymn ‘Abide With Me’ sung by Jon Gibbs.

Also on hand were councilors Mike Allen, Sheila Lalonde, Jeff Peddle, Keith McGrath and Phil Meagher.

After the ceremony, residents are gathering at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 165 to honour the fallen souls as they raise the Canadian Flag.
