Christmas is fast approaching and staff and students at Father Mercredi are working to ensure everyone in the region can celebrate the holiday.
Santas Anonymous is back for another year with referrals beginning on Monday.
Fort McMurray Catholic School District Superintendent George McGuigan tells Mix News the goal is to provide full Christmas hampers and presents for families in need.
“We put on different events and different things, raising money and donations from businesses, communities, and individuals and that money is all pooled together and that helps pay for everything that we do.”
He adds they usually handout around 600 hampers each year.
“The gym is transformed into Santa’s workshop and all packed by students themselves and the community backs in with their trucks and they do all of the deliveries to the families – it’s quite heartwarming.”
McGuigan adds last year the numbers were quite higher due to the wildfire.
Donations can be dropped off at Father Mercredi from 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. from Monday to Friday.
Some of the donations they’re hoping for include toys for children aged 1 – 12, gifts for babies or senior citizens, gift cards for teens, and monetary donations.
