Get To Know Your Ward 3 Candidates

Fort McMurray, AB, Canada / MIX 103.7

ward-3Come October 16, Ward 3 will have a new councillor as incumbent Allan Vinni is running for Mayor.

The Ward, which includes Draper and Saprae Creek Estates, only has one representative on the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo council.

In this election, residents have a choice between Shelia Lalonde or Brad Lucier.

In an effort to help you learn more about your Ward 3 candidates, we sent them a short questionnaire focusing on their ideas and ways to better not only their Ward but the entire region.

The same five questions were sent to both candidates. Answers are posted verbatim and in alphabetical order by last name.

Shelia Lalonde

Tell us a bit about yourself?sheila-lalonde

I’m a long time resident of the RMWB and have lived in Saprae Creek since 1996. I was a member of the subcommittee for tree clearing/ replanting and was involved in the signage for the reclaimed areas in Saprae Creek. I’ve volunteered with various groups in the RMWB by participating in food bank drives, working bingos and casinos.

My husband and I enjoy the rural lifestyle that living in Saprae Creek allows us to have. I enjoy gardening and this year managed to grow all my vegetables from seed. I’m an avid reader who enjoys reading most materials and know that I will be reading all the paperwork before council meetings so I can make informed decisions. I don’t make promises, so I’m not going to be a good politician but I will represent the people of Ward 3 and the RMWB with honesty and integrity.

Why do you feel you’re the best person to represent your Ward?

I feel that I’m the best person to represent Ward 3 because I will address the concerns of the residents. I believe in being held accountable for my decisions and feel that I will represent the voters with integrity and honesty. Because I’m only one vote, I plan on working well with the other councillors to achieve our goals.

What are your top three priorities?

  •  Having the roads and sewers completed in a timely manner for both Draper and Saprae Creek
  •  Having emergency access roads in Saprae Creek and Draper
  •  Maintaining the residential character of Saprae Creek and Draper

What makes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo special to you?

I would say the people. The residents of the RMWB are the most friendly and giving. Your friends become your extended family and that encourages us to help one another. I love the sense of community that Fort McMurray and the surrounding areas have. We all watch out for one another and when someone needs help, we come running.

What is your favourite book/movie/song?

I don’t have a favourite book but I have favourite authors. I’ll read anything written by Tom Clancy, Clive Cussler, James Rollins and Steve Berry.
My favourite movie is “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”
I also don’t have a favourite song; I’ll listen to all genres of music.

Why do you feel you’re the best person to represent your Ward?

I feel I am the best person to represent Ward 3 as I am engaged in the community. I am a business man who has given a great deal of time, talent and treasure back to the community. I feel we need to take a business look at the issues within the municipality with Bill-21, and potentially Bill-8 and prepare for the negative impact these Bills will have on our community. I feel I am good at uniting people to a common goal, which ultimately is the goal of any Council member. We need sound decisions that are good for the community while being fiscally responsible.

What are your top three priorities?

For Ward 3 my top three priorities:

  • Water and Sewer, although this project is moving ahead we need to ensure it stays the course and will not get canceled.
  • Roadways, until the water sewer project is completed in 2019, we need to ensure the roadways are maintained properly, Once Water and Sewer is complete ensure the roadways are brought up to the standard for all communities within Fort McMurray.
  • Bus Staging area, as we have busses staging on the street ruining what pavement that is left and this also poses a safety hazard with vehicles trying to get around the busses while they are staged. The other issue is the noise of the busses idling at all times of the day outside residence homes.

Ward 1 issues

  • Repairing our relationship with Industry, this is critical to our survival within the RMWB
  • Fixing downtown, we need this as it bring a reason for people to come downtown, along with new businesses paying taxes which help our Mill Rate due to Bill-21
  • Working on uniting Council so that we can get down to work and get issues dealt with in a timely manner. This is about doing what is right for the community.

What makes the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo special to you?

RMWB is special to me because of the entrepreneurial spirit that the people and businesses have, and how much the community members care about this place we call home.

What is your favourite book/movie/song?

I don’t know if I have a favorite book, however I do read a lot of Wilbur Smith during my downtime
I watch a lot of movies, so anything that is Drama, or Action Adventure.
I do like all makes of music as well. I listen to top 40, Country when the mood strikes me to 70’s, 80’s and 90’s rock.

Election day is October 16.
