Abasand Petition for Better Amenities gets Around 800 Signatures

Abasand May 2017 // Harvard Broadcasting Reporter Brandon Piper

Hundreds of residents are supporting a petition to push for more amenities in Abasand as the neighbourhood continues to rebuild from last year’s wildfire.

Jenine Haukeness started the petition after she saw a group of mom’s in Timberlea seeking approval for a new splash park. In the petition, she’s asking the RMWB to build an accessible park, splash pad, dog park and a community garden.

Haukeness, who bought their home in Abasand 10 months before it burnt down, tells Mix News she believes these parks could make parents and kids excited to return home.

“It’s a really great opportunity for the RMWB to create a community building project in some of these areas that were hardest hit, a lot of us aren’t home yet and they’re slowly trickling in so I think it’s a great opportunity for us to not only get home but make it feel like home and feel welcomed.”

She notes the upgrades would be really good for everyone’s mental health.

“The parks are for the kids to enjoy and get excited about going to instead of probably having those reservations of the area that they saw possibly on fire before.”

Haukeness started the petition on Thursday, hoping to get 250 signatures. Over 24 hours later, almost 800 people have signed.
