Edmonton-Based Construction Firm Fined For Public Lands Violations Near Fort McMurray

An Edmonton area construction has plead guilty to a charge under the Public Lands Act they violated here in Fort McMurray.

Carmacks Industrial Limited has been fined $20,000 for failing to comply to an order to vacate Fort McMurray public lands.

In 2015, Alberta Environment and Parks learned of the company’s unauthorized presence and made attempts to convince the company to leave the lands.

Back in May of 2016, after attempts were unsuccessful, Alberta Environment and Parks served Carmacks a notice to vacate however, it wasn’t until this past January that the charge came to fruition.

Three other charges, all with similar circumstances, were withdrawn as well as one charge against Carmacks Enterprises Limited.

According to AEP, the Crown concluded that it was not in the public interest to require pleas on the additional charges as they basically duplicated the main charge to which Carmacks Industrial Ltd. pled guilty.

Alberta Environment and Parks notes that it’s their responsibility when companies fail to respect the lands to use proper enforcement up to including prosecution to ensure compliance.
