The Fort McMurray Public School District has a new Director of Education.
Former Principal of Dr. K.A. Clark and Westview School Merrie-Rae Mitsopoulos took over the position on August 1.
She’s been with the district since 2011 where she served as Coordinator of Instruction.
“Being a teacher and a school administrator was enjoyable. I look forward to being able to take the skills and apply them in this new role at the District level,” said Mitsopoulos, in a release. “I always love to see how different teachers and schools do things and will get the opportunity to work with all our schools.”
Mitsopoulos says she wants to continue focusing on literacy and numeracy assisting English Language Learners and indigenous students as well as preparing for the upcoming implementation of the new provincial curriculum.
“We have so many great things happening right now. There are many opportunities for students to gain new experiences in our schools – in athletics, the arts, leadership, and technology, just to name a few, which complement our strong academic programs,” added Mitsopoulos.
