Wood Buffalo RCMP are continuing a search and rescue at Gregoire Lake.

On Sunday, at around 11:30 a.m., RCMP responded to a possible drowning of a 35-year-old man at the Provincial Park.

RCMP Media Relations Officer Corporal Ronald Bumbry tells Mix News the man was canoeing when his boat tipped over.

“Our members, along with Alberta Fish and Wildlife Officers started rescue efforts on the lake, but the male was not located in or around the canoe that was recovered. So, our search efforts continue, utilizing several boats and rescue teams from Fort McMurray and Lac La Biche.”

Search and rescue teams have begun utilizing sonar and an air search is also underway as the investigation continues.

Bumbry adds that the Southshore Boat Launch and Day Use Area will remain closed until further notice.

“There is another boat launch that is available, apparently within that area. But this particular Southshore Boat Launch and Day Use Area remain closed to the public until our search and rescue efforts are completed”
