FireSmart Canada is hosting a first of its kind workshop in Fort McMurray.

This event will help inform landscapers and homeowners how to properly protect their home and their surrounding property from a potential fire spreading into their neighbourhood.

“So, what can we do as homeowners to reduce the likelihood and vulnerability of our homes when comes to landscaping so choosing fire-resistant products, making choices with landscaping materials and landscaping designs,” said Laura Stewart, President of FireSmart Canada.

She notes the material you choose plays a big part in your home’s safety. This includes having leafy trees and rocks around the homes while making sure the grass, flowers, and other vegetation is well maintained and watered.

Stewart adds they will have different products for people to see in person and learn more about.

“We’re going to bring those to the workshop and have them on display so people can touch them, feel them, see them, and understand why they’re a good choice for when it comes to making decisions for their landscaping design.”

The idea is to make this a National event, going to different cities and municipalities informing them of the importance of FireSmart.

The workshop will be held at the Syncrude Sport and Wellness Centre on Thursday, July 13.
