The Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame has four new members.
On Thursday, Volleyball athlete Alwyn Piche, sports historian CJ Phillips, curler Lori-Olson Johns and Special Olympics advocate Ernie Kimball were inducted for their work in sports.
This was supposed to be the class of 2016 but due to the wildfire, they had to wait until this year to be inducted.
Phillips tells Mix News personally he never got into the sports industry to be remembered.
“I don’t do it for the recognition, I do it for the love of sport, sport has done more for me than I will ever do for sport.”
He notes his favourite local sporting moment was seeing the Oil Barons win the Royal Bank Cup in 2000.
“I remember we did televise all the games, one of the rare times I cried to sports, I had a teardrop when I see them skating around the ice.”
The four join a big list of past inductees which includes former NHL players Chris Phillips and Nolan Pratt.
