The Fort McMurray Rotary Club will also be hosting this year’s district conference.

Rotarians from Alberta, British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories will be coming to Fort McMurray in September where they will discuss future and ongoing projects as well as hear from keynote speakers.

Conference Chair for the Rotary Districts Matt Pate tells Mix News Former Fire Chief Darby Allen is one of two confirmed speakers.

“We’re excited to have him speak about his experience leading through a very difficult time.”

Allen retired back in February and moved to Vancouver.

Pate adds Olympic Gold Medalist and current TV personality Jon Montgomery will also be coming to the community.

Montgomery won gold in the skeleton at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Since then, he has been the host of the Amazing Race Canada.

As for projects expected to be discussed, Pate notes the conference will highlight the RMWB’s involvement with Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library.

This program allows families to sign their children up, up to five years old, and receive a free book once a month to help them with literacy while promoting the importance of reading.

“The Fort McMurray Rotary Club has been a champion of this and they’ve done a fantastic job of promoting this program,” said Pate.

A representative from the organization will be in attendance at the conference.

Meanwhile, they are also planning on holding a “Rise Against Hunger” event, coinciding with the conference. Tons of food will be packaged and sent to places where food is scarce and places healing from a disaster.

“People need access to food, quite often, at these events, you’re packaging tens of thousands of packaged meals over the course of a couple days,” added Pate.

The conference will be held at Shell Place from September 28-30.
