Fort McMurray Mantas Swim Club is going for gold this weekend.
The club has eight members taking part in the Northern Alberta Provincial Swimming Championships taking place in Grand Prairie.
Head Coach Mark Chantaj is in his first year as coach and says the competition features girls under the age of 13 and boys who are under the age of 14.
He tells Mix News he’s loved every minute of his first season with the club.
“Our goal has been to keep improving,” Chantaj said. “Get everyone working hard and develop a culture where you can have a lot of fun while working really hard. The kids have really stepped up and done that in the competitive program. A season like that under our belt, it’s pretty exciting going off to a provincial meet.”
Six girls and two boys – all under 14, make up our team this year – which will try and come out big winners in Grand Prairie this weekend at the Northern Alberta Provincials.
Chantaj expects his club to come home with some hardware.
“You’ve prepared, you’ve done the work, your time in Grand Prairie is the fun part where you get to race and see that hard work pay off. Just swim your butt off, get your hand on the wall as fast as you can and just have a blast!”
All in all, the first-year coach is excited to see what his team can do against the competition and has high hopes heading into Grand Prairie.
