Canada’s Under 21 Men’s National Volleyball Team is in Fort McMurray.

On Friday, the team arrived for the Pan American Cup, being welcomed by a big group of people cheering them on as they came down the escalator. This includes many families as well as students from Westwood Community High School.

Volleyball Canada’s Director of International Events Alan Ahac tells Mix News this tournament will be featuring some of the best junior teams in the world.

“For example, Brazil is ranked 4th in the world, Canada 8th, Cuba 13th, these are tremendous teams and tremendous athletes and certainly you will be seeing some future Olympians.”

Ahac notes the team hasn’t been playing together for that long, just finishing their tryout camp earlier in the month.

“Many of them did play together last year on junior teams so there is a little bit of experience from that perspective but they are very much coming together very quickly in preparation for this event.”
The tournament gets underway at Keyano College on Tuesday, May 16, with Cuba taking on Chile. Canada will play in the last game of the night, opening their competition with a match against Guatemala at 8:00 p.m.
The two tops teams will advance to the upcoming World Championships being held in the Czech Republic in June.
