Two More Physicians Recruited To Fort McMurray

Two more doctors are coming to Fort McMurray this summer.

One is a full-time psychiatrist, while the other is a family physician who can deliver babies.

Alberta Health Services says Dr. Stella Ogunsona and her husband, Dr. Adeoluwa (Ade) Ogunsona have recently signed contracts and are expected to begin practicing in the region this summer.

“Dr. Ade Ogunsona will help us support the mental health needs of Fort McMurray as everyone continues to recover from the wildfire last May, and Dr. Stella Ogunsona’s experience will allow her to support young, growing families in the region,” said Dr. Kevin Worry, Medical Director of AHS North Zone, in a release.

AHS says Dr. Ogunsona will be accepting both adult and adolescent patients by mid-summer and Dr. Ogunsona is expected to open her practice at the end of the summer.

Fort McMurray-Wood Buffalo MLA and Shadow Health Minister Tany Yao tells Mix News he’s happy with the new hires but not satisfied.

“There is still more that has to be done, I won’t be appeased until we’re at the same standards as everybody else but what the recent hirings have demonstrated is they do have the ability to hire, my question is why they didn’t hire them a lot earlier.”

According to Dr. Trevor Theman, Registrar with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, doctors are like “free agents” and can choose where they want to open their practice.

The “Fort McMurray Support for Health Care Improvement” Facebook page also sent a statement to Mix News saying they’re excited and grateful for the new doctors.

“We look forward to working towards even more improvements in health care in the future as we believe this is a great start and it makes us feel very optimistic that even more can be done so that members of our community don’t have to drive five hours to access health care as often as they have been in the past.”

In the last six months, AHS has recruited nine new doctors to the region. Last month they announced two paediatricians, two anesthesiologists, two family medicine physicians and a psychiatrist have accepted positions here in Wood Buffalo.

Not including the nine new hires, AHS says right now there are 18 physicians currently accepting new patients.
