Two Canadian athletes are coming to Fort McMurray for the Wood Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame Induction Dinner.
Olympic Gold Medalist Bruny Surin and former Canadian national team men’s volleyball athlete Dallas Soonias will be guest speakers at the annual event.
Soonias joined Canada’s Men’s Volleyball team back in 2004 and spent the last 13 years with the team. He’s played professionally in Asia, Europe and the Middle East.
Soonias is of Canada’s First Nation, taking upon himself to visit Northern native communities running volleyball clinics
Surin was part of Canada’s gold medal 4x100m relay team at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics. He’s also won four World Championship titles in both indoor and outdoor track levels.
He is now a television analyst, preaching the importance of an active lifestyle to Canadian youth.
Last year’s event was cancelled so the WBSHOF will honour the 2016 inductees. This includes volleyball athlete Alwyn Piche, sports historian CJ Phillips, curler Lori-Olson Johns and Special Olympics advocate Ernie Kimball.
The dinner will take place on June 22. Tickets have yet to go on sale.
