Roughly 10, 000 grade 4 to 6 students across Canada were asked to write an essay explaining what home means to them.
10-year-old Bayan Assaf, who attends Fort McMurray Islamic School, was one of ten runner up’s in Genworth’s 10th annual “Meaning of Home Contest” for a poem she wrote about the wildfire.
“Home is a place where we all first saw the sun, It makes me happy, but it made me cry, when we left in May, all we could do was pray … we came back stronger, ready to rebuild our precious city and make it all nice and pretty ….,” an excerpt from Assaf’s poem.
Assaf won $5000 to give to the Habitat for Humanity of her choice. She chose to send the money to the Wood Buffalo branch.
