Head Coach of the Fort McMurray Oil Barons is being recognized for his work.
Tom Keca has been named the 2016-17 AJHL Coach of the Year.
This is Keca’s second year as bench boss of the MOB. In the 2015-16 season, the team finished in 7th place in the North Division with 30 points.
He tells Mix News he is honoured to be chosen for the award.
“Being recognized because of a vote by your peers carries a little extra weight.” added Keca. “I’m extremely happy for our organization, I think this is a reward that is a testimate to not only players but the coaching staff.”
Keca believes this award shouldn’t be just for him, adding the award should go to the best coaching staff.
“I was given some good advice and they said the first thing you do as a head coach is surround yourself with quality individuals that are going to make you look a lot better than what you are and I think I’ve been very blessed and fortunate to have that.”
The last Oil Baron Coach to receive this honour was Bob Murray in 1991-1992.
With three regular season games left this year, the Barons have 89 points and remain in a battle for first place. All they need to clinch first is one win, reaching the feat for the first time since 2007-08.
