The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo officially has a new Fire Chief.
Jody Butz took over the position on Monday from Darby Allen, who retired on Friday.
Butz has been with the Regional Emergency Services since 2001 and played a key leadership role during the wildfire.
He tells Mix News he’s now ready to help in a much larger role.
“The Regional Fire Chief’s position is truly a leadership position. What I’m looking forward to is helping develop other people in the department.”
He adds the lessons learned from last spring will help how they approach challenges in the future.
“We’re stronger for what we went through. With that increase level of confidence, at the end of the day it provides a better service.”
Butz says one thing he won’t be overlooking this year is the river breakup.
He notes the province will have more information and a prediction on what the river will do closer to mid-march.
