Winter Fest Set to Take Over Weekend in Anzac
Residents can head down to Anzac to partake in the annual Winter Fest Event.

Fort McMurray #468 First Nation is joining forces to make the event the largest it has ever been. The biggest activity will be the annual fishing derby. Around 300 participants will hit the ice and try and catch the biggest fish, with the grand prize being for $5,000.

“By doing that, we can provide so much more activities and fun things for families so it really is focused on families,” said Cindy Miller, Band Manager.

There will also be a youth grand prize of $1,000.

Now because the derby is one big contest, there are specific rules everyone must follow.

“There is no live bait, no fish finder equipment, things of that nature,” added Miller. “Because it is focused on family, it’s a non-alcohol event so we’re just looking for everybody to come out and have a good day.”

Anyone 17 and under can register for free, however, adults must pay $50 to join. The event itself starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with registration opening just a couple hours before at 9 a.m.

Other activities include a poker tournament being held at the Anzac Community Hall, a pancake breakfast on Saturday as well as many activities for kids throughout the days.

Due to the weather, the skating and slide hill will most likely be closed due to the recent weather hitting the area.
