Alberta Winter Games kick off one year from today in RMWB

The Alberta Winter Games are taking place one year from today.

Close to 3,000 athletes, coaches, and officials will visit the municipality to compete in 8 different regional zones, in 22 different sporting events for four days next February.

Co-Chair of the AWG committee Mohamed Salem says the games are from the community for the community, events are being planned for Fort McKay to Anzac and everywhere in between.

A “One year out” event to commemorate the day was held at the Jubilee Plaza to inform the public of some of the opportunities the event will bring.

Winter Games Co-Chair, Amanda Mercer, announced the Fort McMurray Catholic and Public School Districts are partnering with the AWG Committee to provide housing for athletes during their stay.

As well, a $500,000 gift-in-kind sponsorship was announced from Tridon Communications.

Wood Buffalo is no stranger to big sports events.

In 2015, the region hosted the Western Canada Summer Games, and last November, Shell Place hosted the CCAA Soccer National Championships.
