Fort McMurray, AB, Canada / MIX 103.7

Fort McMurray Public School District is receiving a grant from Bell Let’s Talk.

Members of the initiative including Olympic Medalist, Clara Hughes, Chair, Mary Deacon and Singer, Sean McCann spoke with students at Ecole McTavish Junior High school about mental well-being.

After an exciting performance from McCann, they announced the FMPSD is getting $20,000 dollars from their Community Funds grant.

Deacon tells Mix News there was no doubt the need to make Youth Programs a priority was huge in Fort McMurray.

“We see the openness in young people to engage in this issue, we see the potential they have to be those agents of change.”

Deacon says the onset of mental health happens in the early years and intervening with the right supports is why they fund projects like the ones in the region.

Hughes says Fort McMurray is like a template of how to build strong supports around mental health.

“It reminds very much fo where I come from in Winnipeg, it’s a warm and rich, beautiful place that I find inspiring.”

The main focus points for the initiative is “Language matters, Be Kind, Listen and Ask, and Talk About it.”
