Canadian Blood Services is looking for a hundred thousand new donors.
The organization put out the call in November but has seen a shortage because of winter weather. Reports from the CBS says they were down over 2 thousand donations at the end of December.
If you’re interested in giving blood and helping out, however, you’ll have to plan a trip to the closest center in Edmonton.
Director of Donor Relations for the Prarie Region, Susan Matsumoto tells Mix News, Fort McMurray’s distance from the closest production site is one of the factors keeping the region from having a permanent center.
“It’s complex in terms of where we choose to put permanent clinics, but that’s something that is under review on a regular basis in our organization.”
She adds a mobile or temporary clinic might be an option, but, the last one to operate in the RMWB was in 2002.
“A lot of time is spent traveling as opposed to actually collecting blood which actually drives up costs.”
CBS says they are halfway to their goal but still need over 40,000 new donors before the end of March.
