Demand For Substitute Teachers Spikes In Fort McMurray

Pressures from dealing with the wildfire has teachers needing more time-off and a higher demand for substitutes.

According to the Alberta Teachers Association, the number of teachers on call is down nearly 50 per cent in the Fort McMurray Public School District.

The Catholic School District is also reporting similar numbers.

President of the Teachers Association Nancy Ball tells Mix News while most teachers are back to work, more staff have been granted leave than in the past.

“With the understanding of the difficulty that some teachers are experiencing from the evacuation to losing their homes. But, we looking forward to seeing them come back next year.”

Ball traveled down to Edmonton last month to recruit teachers on call to Fort McMurray.

She says they hope to add an extra 35 to 40 to help ease the strain on existing staff.
