Wood Buffalo council is deferring a major project until 2018.
Back in April, council voted to proceed with the design and construction of the Northside Recreation Centre and Twin Arena.
Phase 1 was ready to be tendered last month, while the design for the second phase had been on hold pending further review by Council.
But at their meeting on Tuesday evening, councillors voted to postpone the project.
The decision came after a meeting with the Recreation Corporation of Wood Buffalo.
Officials say given the current ice usage and economic situation, along with the post-wildfire population projections, the project isn’t needed at this time.
