A couple from High River are helping bring Christmas cheer to Fort McMurray residents.
Helga Lempriere and her husband, Terry, lost most of their personal belongings during a massive flood that ravaged the region in 2013.
Helga tells Mix News the support they received after the flooding was incredible and they knew they had to help residents here after the fire.
“When we started seeing the pictures and hearing about Fort McMurray, it was kind of a flash back. And so, I could totally empathize with that. I re-called the Christmas ornament drive that happened here and thought, why doesn’t someone do that for Fort McMurray and why can’t that someone be me?
The couple are collecting ornaments in cities across southern Alberta. They will then be brought to Fort McMurray at the end of October, so residents can re-stock all their Christmas decorations lost in the fire.
“Christmas time can be financially strapped as it is, not to mention having to re-stock all your Christmas decorations and supplies. So that was just a huge thing for me,” says Helga.
A drop off site has yet to be determined.
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe page has also been started. Helga says all the money raised will be spent at stores here in Fort McMurray.
