Pipeline leak at Suncor Base Plant

The Alberta Energy Regulator has confirmed that a pipeline leak occurred this morning at Suncor Base Plant.

At approximately 3 a.m. a pipeline carrying diluent from base to Firebag leaked, causing the substance to spray onto brush on Suncor-leased land.

Diluent is a substance used to thin out bitumen to allow it to be transported through pipelines.

“AER staff are onsite to ensure Suncor meets all requirements,” said AER Public Affairs Advisor Jordan Fitzgerald. “The cause of the release remains unknown.”

Suncor is estimating that 20,000 litres of diluent was spilled, an amount unconfirmed by the AER.

Traffic was backed up near the base plant this morning as reports surfaced that contractors were being turned away at the gates due to the spill.
