Fire Index Level moves up

Map indicating region covered by Notice to Airmen from Alberta Wildfires, July, 2016//Map supplied by Alberta Wildfire

Warm weather and little precipitation are contributing to a change in the fire hazard index level.

Alberta Wildfire says the level is now at moderate with a couple of areas at high, namely Fort Chipewyan and the southwest corner of the Fort McMurray zone.

There is currently one active wildfire, the Horse River fire, but it’s under control and under investigation.

The ministry is reminding people not to enter burned areas as the root systems of burned trees are weakened and can fall without any wind.

They are maintaining a Notice to Airmen. or NOTAM, over the southern and eastern portions of the Horse River fire so a reminder is being issued that drones are not allowed to be flown in that airspace.

As well, for residents and visitors to the area, you need a fire permit for all burning, except campfires, within the Forest Protection Area of the Fort McMurray Forest Area and within the Urban Service Area permits are required for all burning including campfires.

For fire permits in the Forest Protection Area call 780-743-7125 and for fire permits in the Urban Service Area call 780-792-5519.
