The Wood Buffalo Recovery Committee is supporting a moratorium on development in Abasands, Beacon Hill, and Waterways.

The moratorium would be temporary and linked to when the province’s Chief Medical Officer of Health declares in writing that the areas are safe for human habitation.

Administration says there remains significant risk to public health and safety in the affected areas and don’t know when it will be safe to re-inhabit the undamaged residences within these neighbourhoods.

It also remains to be determined how long it will take to do a complete demolition and cleanup of damaged structures.

A public hearing on the matter is one of the items on Council’s agenda Tuesday night.
