Although some residents may not be returning to Fort McMurray after the wildfire forced the evacuation of the city, there’s at least one new member of the community who arrived early Friday morning.

Alberta Health Services yesterday announced the birth of Eli Danny Roy Mercer at the Northern Lights Regional Hospital, the first baby born there since the evacuation last month.

Baby Eli arrived at 5:02 weighing six pounds, seven ounces and is the second child for Melissa Taylor and Steven Mercer.

Manager of the maternity/child unit at the health centre Juanita Pilgrim says it’s a return to normal for her and her staff and she’s happy to see that.

The health centre has been slowly opening different departments and is expected to be back to comprehensive healthcare services June 21.
