The wildfire near Fort McMurray is still classified as out of control
That from Alberta Wildfire this afternoon which says it’s estimated to be 229,078 hectares in size. The increase in size is due to the Horse River wildfire (MWF-009) overrunning the wildfire that was burning to the east which was MWF-015. An updated measurement of the wildfire is expected today.
Wildfire Information Officer Leah Lovequist says firefighters continue to see active fires with several flare-ups occurring today to the south of Anzac, west of highway 63 and on the north and south sides of the Athabasca River. Helicopters bucketing water on these flare ups has been effective.
Lovequist says firefighters continue to be successful in holding the wildfire from the subdivisions of Timberlea, Thickwood, Anzac and Gregoire Lake Estates and dozers continue to build guard around the north at Parsons Creek North,Timberlea/Thickwood, west of highway 63 near Anzac and along the southern end of the wildfire.
A dozer guard has been completed in the Gregoire Lakes Estate area.
