Alberta govt. announces new truck staging area north of Fort McMurray

Provincial government announce new truck staging area on Highway 63 north of Fort McMurray // April 29, 2016

A new truck staging area is slated to be built north of Fort McMurray near Supertest Hill, the provincial government announced Friday morning.

There is currently just one truck staging area in the region, located south of Fort McMurray.

Construction of the second staging area will have a number of benefits including job creation, relieving of traffic congestion and enhanced safety along Highway 63.

Debbie Jabbour, MLA for Peace River, made the official announcement at a small ceremony along the Parsons Creek Interchange on Highway 63 today.

Mayor Melissa Blake endorsed the project, saying that she believes it will be very positive for Wood Buffalo in the years to come.

Over 17,000 vehicles use Highway 63 northbound out of Fort McMurray every day, many of them industrial vehicles and buses, according to government data.

The new staging area is part of a five-year $7 billion commitment to improving Alberta’s roads and bridges under the Alberta Jobs Plan.
